The OU/NIDRR Accessibility Components

As part of an effort to encourage accessibility on the Web and to make things easier for those creating Internet training, who don't have time to learn the programming to create accessible online courses, we* have produced several components to install with your Macromedia Flash files that will allow even Flash novices to produce accessible and easy to use training pieces. These components, once installed, use the Component Inspector in Flash as a type of wizard to guide you through the steps to create an interactive online course, ready for Web access.

To use these components you'll need:

  • A copy of Adobe's Macromedia Flash 8 or higher
  • A Web server with access to the Internet or your organization's Intranet
  • The components - which you can download below
  • The file swfobject.js - which can also be downloaded below
  • The desire to create accessible online training

What they are

There are six OU/NIDRR Accessible Components.

  • Three different versions of the Interface Component allow you to select between three different interfaces: red or purple with a white background or a high contrast version with a black background.
  • The Menu Component provides a menu in your courses. This allows learners to skip to the topics that they select.
  • The Text/Image Component is used to display the bulk of your content. It includes six different layouts so that you can create a variety of looks using the components.
  • Use the Pop-Up Component to allow some interaction in your course. Learners click or tab to various areas on the screen to display more information.
  • The Multiple Choice Component will help you create multiple choice and true/false questions that evaluate your users' knowledge and keep learners engaged.
  • A Text Entry Component is used when you want a learner to type a specific answer.
